*CLOSED*Julie & Julia Book Review and Giveaway

I would like to introduce my guest blogger Linda. She will be reviewing books for my blog on occasion. I hope you enjoy her review :)

We have all been seeing the previews of the movie Julie & Julia, starting tomorrow in theatres. Well, thanks to Hachette Book Group USA, I was able to read the book first. The book is written by Julie Powell. It is her memoir of cooking her way through Julia Childs cookbook in 365 days. When I was reading the book, I didn't realize it was based on a true story. In the front of the book, it says not everything is true, but all the cooking and dilemmas she faces are. This made it a more enjoyable read for me.

Julie Powell is a 29 year old woman who feels like her life is going nowhere. She decides to give her life some direction by cooking all the recipes in Julia Childs 524 page cookbook, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in 365 days. Julie is not a chef, nor an accomplished cook, but she wants to feel like she completes something in her life. Her husband is in complete support of her and suggests she not only cook the recipes, but blog about it as well. She actually does have a blog online that you can visit here.

The trials and tribulations that Julie goes through will amaze you and give you a good chuckle as well. As she writes her blog, you see that her followers are very supportive. Some keep her going with wit, others with criticism. Either way she continues to persevere with each recipe she completes. Some of the things she had to cook, I had no idea Julia Childs cooked. I also never knew the French would enjoy eating them!!

I have read other reviews where people were not a big fan of Julie Powell for several reasons. As for me, the complaints I had about the book were some strong language and many of Julie Powell's political stands. Everyone has different opinions and I understand and respect that. I thought the book itself had some cute moments and was worth the read, especially once I knew it was a memoir. I believe this book will make a great movie if it is done correctly. It should make for quite a few laughs in the theatre.

Now, if you would like a chance to win a copy of the book Julie & Julia, Hachette Book Group is giving me 5 copies to giveaway to my readers. How nice of them is that? All you have to do is:

Leave me a comment below with what your current favorite book is.

That's it, I couldn't make it easier if I tried. If you want additional entries, you can:

one of my favorite books is "goodnight nobody" by Jennifer Weiner. It is a mystery combined with the story of a mom of three and how she is coping with life in a new suburban town. Weiner is one of my favorite authors!

My favorite book right now is probably one of the Harry Potter books - it's hard for me to choose a favorite out of the series.

It's so hard to choose just one favorite! I love to read so this is a great contest. It's been months since I've been able to sit down and read something that isn't 10 pages long and filled with cartoon characters.

I think my favorite book of all time is probably (yes this is dorky) I'll Love You Forever. It's just such a sweet story and brings tears to my eyes.

OMG, I was just telling my hubby not 5 minutes ago that I want to go see this movie (it opens here today) but might wait til next week to see it (I usually just wait for the dvd), but I wondered if I should just go on my own or ask if anyone in my bookclub would want to meet me there. I totally didn't even think there'd be a book! Now I'll just have to wait for the dvd because I' LOVE to read the book first. And of course, now I'll have to wait to see if I win your giveaway before I go buy the book ;-)
You're having such great giveaways - my thanks to you.

Oh, pick me! :-) I've been talking about this movie all week with friend saying I'd like to see it. Since I know I won't view it until it comes to pay-per-view or video, I might as well read the book first. Thanks for the opportunity to win it Laurie!

My favorite book is Annie G. Freeman's Traveling Funeral by Kris Radish. It's a book about friendship, diversity and celebrating life. How funny that you mention that people don't like that book because of political views. I can't understand why some folks cannot see past someone's beliefs (political, relgious and what have you) and just get to know the person. Or maybe it's just because those things don't consume my life. Regardless, it's a person's character that I look at.

Ooops, I forgot to say what my favorite book is. Right now I'm reading Audition by Barbara Walters, it's her memoir (for our book club) and it's surprisingly interesting (I've never really liked Barbara Walters). My favorite bookS lately have been the Twilight series. I started on these a few months ago after hearing so much about them and was totally hooked. I read all 4 of them within a few weeks and am now thinking of reading them through again, something I've only ever done with a book twice before... the first was Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann, and the other was Suffer the Children by John Saul!
